How I can ping my network computers and gateways?

Postby Jussi on Fri Jan 20, 2006 10:17 am

I have a Nokia 6680.
I need a ping program, where I can ping my network computers, and gateways.
How to do it?

You should be able to ping your network computers and gateways with our Ping utility provided that:

1) You have configured a TCP/IP access point to your phone
(See e.g. http://www.aspicore.com/gsmtrackerhelp/v110/gprs.htm#GPRS )

2) Your network has public IP addresses accessible from GPRS/3G Internet.

(Or you have got a private GPRS/3G access point that can access directly your LAN private IP addresses. This you must order from your cellular operator and it is quite costly, at least in my country.)

I am not familiar with Nokia 6680, but I try to tell some instructions based on my experience on other Nokia's Symbian devices.

I don't know exactly, what is the problem with your phone, so I give some background info to avoid misunderstandings. Sorry, if some of the instructions sound too obvious.

1)
Our Ping program is intended to be used with a GPRS / 3G cellular data connection.
It is not intended to be used e.g. via an USB cable connection and Nokia PC Suite.

2)
The consequence is that the phone appears to your network as an external Internet host.

(This is the normal case unless you have so called private company access point, a kind of VPN connection, ordered from your cellular operator.)

In other words, the Ping packets you send from the phone, come to your network from an external Internet address.

(You can see this external Internet address with the "Tools" -> "Interface info" command while connected. See the "Local IP" in the output text.)

3)
If your gateways and network pc's are in a private network behind a firewall, you CANNOT ping them from the phone without special firewall configuration.

4)
If your phone has a setting "Internet setup" / "Ask before connecting" (or similar), make sure that the setting is turned on.

5)
After launching our Ping utility, when you first time execute the Ping command, after entering the host IP or URL, the phone should ask you to select an access point. (Provided that the setting "Ask before connecting" is turned on, otherwise the phone may automatically select the first available access point from the list in the connection settings.)

Select the Internet (TCP/IP) access point from the list. MMS and WAP access points do not work with Ping!

6)
If you don't see an Internet access point in the list, try to find out from your cellular operator, how to add it.

You may also have a look at http://www.aspicore.com/gsmtrackerhelp/v110/gprs.htm#GPRS for some instructions, how to configure a GPRS/3G Internet access point into phone's settings.

Hopefully you get further with this info. I must say, that it is sometimes hard to get the TCP/IP settings work with a Symbian phone, depending on how good instructions your cellular operator gives to you for your specific phone model. For exactly that reason I wanted to have a Ping utility for my Series 60 phone and found that there is no such utility publicly available, so we decided to make one.
