SIM Free Operation

Postby stuartma on Wed Jun 16, 2010 3:28 pm

Good afternoon,

I was wondering is it possible to use GSMTracker over a WiFi Access Point without a SIM card in the mobile device? I am egger to test my current server plat form build around Aspicore GSM Tracker and having another phone sending updates just over the WiFi would be quite helpful?

I currently only have a demo installed on this spare phone, so if the feature I'm looking for is available in the full version I would happily purchase another copy. I just wanted to be sure if it is an option or is not?

Yours,

No, completely SIM free operation (= sending data) is not possible in the current version (3.23). Aspicore GSM Tracker refuses to connect to the Internet, if the active phone profile is "Offline".

So, you need a SIM card to activate the "General" profile in the phone. Then you can make the Internet connection through WiFi. The SIM card does not need to be operational, though. Any old expired SIM card will do, if you happen to have one.

You can turn on the option "Ignore GSM coverage" on the Net tab of the settings. This way you should get automatic Internet connection working (through WiFi) even if the phone is not connected to the mobile phone network.

You can try this solution in the demo version first. You can then decide, if it works for your needs, before making the purchase decision.
